Becoming A Filmmaker

I started making films in 2009, when I switched majors from graphic design to Communication Arts in college. Before this, I wanted to be an actor, and I tried acting as a teenager in high school. I switched to filmmaking because all the graphic design classes were full, and film production seemed like a good alternative.

I became inspired after reading Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Rebel Without a Crew’ and watching Steven Soderbergh’s ‘The Girlfriend Experience’ both filmmakers are known for directing, shooting, and editing their own work, I wanted to follow this same career path.

I was very impressed by ‘El Mariachi’ Rodriguez’s film that launched his career in the early 90’s. I studied the films of Steven Soderbergh, astonished by the fact that he could direct, shoot, and edit movies like Erin Brockovich, Traffic, contagion, and Haywire.

In 2014 Soderbergh directed, shot, and edited a Cinemax series called ‘The Knick’ a brilliant show about a fictional hospital in early 1900s New York, which starred Clive Owen, André Holland, and Eve Hewson. In 2015 I got to be an extra on theshow’s second season, after answering an ad on Craigslist of all places. This was one of the most fascinating experiences of my life, to watch Steven Soderbergh at work making a show.
